Parents and family:
Father: James (Jim)

Physical description:
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 125
Eye shape/color: Just your average shape, gray green hazel
Facial features: Val is reasonably good looking but in a non-specific and normal
sort of way. There's nothing glaringly wonderful about any of his features. They
just work nicely together.
Hair color/style/texture: Dyed bright purple with about two inches of solid
black roots. Sticks out all over the place – more tufted than spikey.
Complexion: A bit pale from spending too much time in garages and workshops.
Build: On the slim and wiry side.
Identifying marks: A few tattoos - mostly artsy knot-work/linear designs - just
black, no color - A generally v-shaped design between his shoulderblades, a
small upside-down v-shaped design at the base of his spine, a bracelet-like
design around his right upper arm, and a diamond-esque design around his navel.
Handiness: Right
Dress: Overalls or coveralls when he's working - which is most of the time. When
he's being social, he tends towards 'clubbing' clothes. Nothing overly slutty or
tasteless - but enough to usually set his conservative family's collective teeth
on edge. Colorwise, he leans towards purple (hence the hair), black, silver, and
white.
Jewelry: Numerous piercings, all silver - enough metal all told to stick fridge
magnets to. Mostly around either ear, one in his right nostril, two in his left
eyebrow. And one in the navel. Owie.
General Background: The middle child of three, Val neither had the pressure of
being the eldest nor the coddling of being the youngest. Left to himself for the
most part, he was content to fiddle with his tinkertoys. His earliest memories
were of his father campaigning for something or other - and most memories of his
formative years were filled with the exact same thing. His entire family life
revolved around his father's political career, and though his mother, brother,
and sister all contributed whole-heartedly, he never took much interest in it.
At school, he was a reasonably intelligent student who applied himself and got
respectable grades. His brother, two years ahead of him, was popular,
well-liked, and a football player. Definitely a member of the A-group. His
sister, following two years behind him, was perky, also well-liked, and a
cheerleader. Still A-group material. Val was sociable enough and not bad on the
eyes, but he prefered the company of a crowd that didn’t spend half of its time
running about in a trendily dressed herd and the other half turning on each
other like a pack of mad hyena.
His new friends introduced him to the more interesting sides of piercings and
hair dye and gave him a nicely diverse point-of-view from his rather stiff home
environment. Much to his father's chagrin, his favored school activity turned
out to be shop class and not student government which he avoided like the plague
due to serious lack of interest. He discovered a real talent with machinery and
also an actual enjoyment of working with it, eventually getting an afterschool
job at a local garage – instead of with his father’s campaign office as was
expected of him. Even after graduation from highschool, he kept his job at the
garage, foregoing further education in favor of something he actually –liked–.
Though his older brother and younger sister were dedicated to their father’s
work, helping out with rallies and public outings, Val gradually started to
avoid them which, as he started taking more and more liberty with his
appearance, his father was likely grateful for. In fact, both his father and
older brother were known to comment that Val was more like a middle finger than
a middle child – always sticking out and offending people. Most people might
have found that sort of comment a little on the offensive side, but he didn’t
really take it seriously.
Knowing that his choice of dress and lifestyle where hardly what your average
politician wanted to advertise, Val just let himself fade out of the public
view. Just because he didn’t like his father’s career, didn’t mean that he
wanted to harm it. Each to his own. So he turned his attention towards his work
and his friends, and left it at that.
Personality: Val looks like a little punk, but really isn't that bad. He wasn’t
the kind of person to outspokenly rebel against his family. He just sort of
gradually drifted in the opposite direction. Granted, he started getting the
piercings and tattoos for shock value, but he only kept getting them after
realizing how much he actually liked them on an artistic level. No stranger to
clubs or raves, he likes the press of dancing, sweaty humanity but he isn’t a
poster child for the evils people like his father pinned on such places. In
other words, he doesn’t smoke (much), have casual sex (often), or do drugs
(true). He doesn’t agree with his family’s values, but he also doesn’t have
anything against them personally, so he just tries to stay out of the way and
not draw public attention to himself. He truly loves his work and his passion
makes him an extremely good mechanic. Though he’s fairly content working at the
garage, he’d be more than happy to take any better opportunity that came along.
On a personal level, he’s not very serious – almost always joking and sometimes
a bit too glib. He’s intelligent but tends to divert that intelligence only into
things he’s actually interested in. Generally affable and friendly, he likes
crowds and being social. He gets lonely easily but fills his time with work to
make it manageable. Easy-going, it’s difficult to make him angry, but distinctly
possible. He’s just a slow-burn.
Hobbies: With the soul of a grease monkey, Val likes tinkering even when he’s
not at work. He enjoys sketching the little ideas he has from time to time, and
designing new and interesting tattoos that he may or may not make official one
day. He also has a weakness for retro New Wave music.
